BALI — Indonesia and Australia are strengthening cooperation to tackle the growing threat of drug abuse and illicit narcotics trafficking across borders.
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of Denpasar City attended the signing of an extension to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Narcotics Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BNN RI) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The event was held at the second-floor meeting room of the Bali Provincial BNN office and was attended by BNN Denpasar City Chief KBP Dr. Leo Dedy Defretes, S.H., S.I.K., M.H.
BNN RI Chief Komjen Pol Suyudi Ario Seto, S.I.K., S.H., M.Si., attended the event along with senior BNN officials, the Head of the Bali Provincial BNN, and representatives of the Australian Federal Police.
The event began with remarks from the BNN RI Chief, followed by an address from the Australian Federal Police Commissioner. The two agencies then formally signed the extension of their cooperation agreement before concluding the event with a joint photo session.
Drug trafficking is increasingly linked to networks that operate across national borders, making cooperation between law enforcement agencies an important part of efforts to disrupt illicit drug distribution.
The extension of the MoU is intended to strengthen collaboration between Indonesian and Australian law enforcement agencies in addressing transnational narcotics crimes. The cooperation supports broader efforts in prevention, enforcement and the handling of illicit narcotics trafficking, particularly where criminal networks operate across jurisdictions.
For BNN Denpasar, participation in the event also reflects the agency's commitment at the local level to supporting stronger coordination in implementing Indonesia's Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Narcotics Trafficking (P4GN) program.
What Does the MoU Mean for Bali? Bali's position as an international tourism destination makes cooperation between law enforcement agencies particularly relevant to efforts to prevent the circulation of illegal drugs.
Through stronger coordination between national and international law enforcement institutions, BNN continues to promote a more integrated approach to combating drug abuse and illicit narcotics trafficking.
The extended cooperation between BNN RI and the Australian Federal Police is therefore part of a broader effort to strengthen international law enforcement coordination and support Indonesia's goal of reducing drug abuse and illicit narcotics distribution.
